The R&R Empowering Society of Alberta’s Seniors Program is dedicated to building meaningful, intergenerational connections across the province. By bringing together Alberta’s youth and seniors through shared, community-driven experiences, we aim to reduce loneliness and improve seniors’ mental well-being — while offering youth an opportunity to connect with generations that came before them.
Our first event brought together a BAHA youth hockey team and seniors from Place Beauséjour Independent Living in Beaumont. The group enjoyed a delicious pre-game meal at The Mill Craft Bar and Kitchen, followed by a bus ride together to an Edmonton Oil Kings hockey game. This fun-filled night sparked conversations, laughter, and new friendships.
We then replicated the event in Whitecourt, pairing a Whitecourt Minor Hockey team with seniors from The Whitecourt Lodge, once again sharing a meal and cheering on Canada’s greatest game side by side at a Whitecourt Wolverines game.
To build on those connections, we later hosted a summer BBQ in Beaumont, reuniting the youth and seniors from previous events for another chance to share stories, reconnect, and enjoy time together.
Most recently, we held a Seniors Paint Day at Place Beauséjour. Each youth was paired with a senior, and together they painted portraits of one another — revealing their artwork at the end. It was a lighthearted and joy-filled afternoon, filled with laughter, creativity, and heartfelt connection.
Through every event, the goal remains the same: to foster real relationships between generations by bridging Alberta’s past and future — one conversation, one memory, and one hockey game at a time.
